SD Cards (size, format, structure)

Is there a maximum size of SD card that a Nuvi will recognise ?

Considering there's not much difference in price between an 8 and 16 Gb card I'm inclined to follow the AJ Foyt dictum of, "there ain't no substitute for cubic inches", if it will be recognised.

I currently use a 16 GB SD card and have no problem with my Nuvi 265W.

Thanks for the reply.

I phoned Garmin technical and was told a maximum of 2GB !!

As I had a 2GB card in my camera, I took a chance and ordered a 4GB card. Reckoning that if it didn't work in the nuvi, I could switch the cards.

The 4GB card seems fine at the moment but it's good to know that if I run out of space I can go for a bigger card.

That's a 4, an 8 and a 16 GB card being used without any problem.

I wonder why the Garmin tech guy stated the 2GB maximum ?

Is that the space required for a full European or North America map install ?

I was told by Garmin that a 4 GB card was maximum. I am using one and have no issues but it would be nice if they got their stories straight...

Maybe the maximum Garmin is talking about is the maximum they can supply.

Hello.
I just bought 8 GB card for my Garmin.San Disc 8GB SDHC card.
This is class 2 SD card it means this card is based on 2GB card specification. Works very well and I do not have to worry that the card is technologically advanced because it is not and I have a guarantee that is recognised by Garmin.

Hi,
What I did was to format the card in the unit first and then is will say OK and from that point all should be OK... and no more the 1 GB.

It's also strange that the documentation doesn't quote a max size for the SD card. Surely this should be part of the specification.

Hi. I don't know if I'm jumping in correctly or not but............

I won't tell my long sad story but I want to add that (yes I'm using 265W as well) I've determined this morning that SDHC cards are not recognised. Or at least mine will not. I put in a regular old SD card and it recognises it.

There are more than two kind of SD memory cards

Older device marked "SD" only recognizes memory cards up to 4GB, as explained here:
